Where to go for a 2-day holiday in Italy: ideas for a family weekend that isn't tiring
Two days are enough, if you choose well. The destinations I recommend as a mom and a travel agent: a few hours drive, things to do for children and grandparents, and some mistakes to avoid.
Flu · · 4 min

Are two days too few? Only if you waste them
They ask me almost every week: «Flu, we have a free weekend, where should we go?». And almost always the right answer isn't the most famous destination, but the one you can reach without losing half a day in the car.
My rule, as a mom even before being an agent: for a two-day trip, the travel time should not exceed three hours. Beyond that, the weekend becomes a move. I also talked about it in this article on time and price: the cheaper trip is not always the one that's worth more.
Below you'll find the destinations I know well, starting with those we organize, and then other feasible ideas that I'm happy to recommend even if they're not in our catalog.
- Maximum 3 hours travel per leg
- One big thing a day, not three
- Sleep in the same place for both nights, if possible
- Book places with limited access in advance
Umbria: waterfalls, Norcia and the plains of Castelluccio
It's the weekend I would propose to anyone with children and grandparents together. You can see the Marmore Falls even without walking much, Norcia can be explored on foot in an afternoon, and the Piani di Castelluccio, in early July, are something children will remember.
Our Umbria weekend departs on July 2, 2027 and returns on the 4th: €256 per person, with Saturday dinner included. Small group, escort from Italy, no one rushing. If you're interested, read the full Umbria weekend program.
Tuscan Maremma: free thermal baths, tuff villages and silence
If you're looking for a place where grandparents relax and children let off steam, Maremma is hard to beat. In two days you can easily do the Sorano thermal baths, Pitigliano at sunset, and a walk between Sovana and the "vie cave" (sunken roads).
We offer it in a longer version, the Green Week in Maremma from June 12 to 18, 2027, but if you only have a weekend, ask me for a short version: it can be done, and well.

A long weekend? Etna and Taormina
It's not a dry two-day weekend, I'll be honest: for Sicily you need at least three nights. But if you have a long weekend, Etna and Taormina with children are a real experience, not just a postcard.
Our trip is from March 5 to 8, 2027, from €910 for 2 adults and one child, flights excluded (from approximately €50 from Pisa, quoted upon confirmation). All details on the Etna and Taormina page.

Other destinations I recommend for 2 days (write to us to organize your weekend)
Ferrara by bike: flat, safe, with walls you can cycle along even with small children. It combines well with the Po Delta.
Ravenna and its mosaics: it seems like an adult idea, but children are left speechless in front of San Vitale. And the sea is fifteen minutes away.
Lake Trasimeno: ferry to Isola Maggiore, slow pace, honest prices. Perfect with grandparents.
Langhe and Roero in autumn: hills, castles, snacks. A weekend for those who love good food, with some walks through the vineyards.
Lake Garda off-season: in spring or October it's a completely different experience compared to August. Sirmione early in the morning, then a lakeside stroll.
Civita di Bagnoregio and Tuscia: the village on the bridge, then the free thermal baths of Viterbo. Ideal if you're starting from central Italy.
Naples and Pompeii: intense, but two well-organized days (one city, one site) also work with older kids.
- Avoid Cinque Terre and Venice on long weekends: too crowded for children
- Choose a single base and take short trips
- Check museum closing days: it's often Monday
- With grandparents, ask for ground floor rooms or with an elevator
WHEN TO GO: THE SEASON MATTERS MORE THAN THE DESTINATION
Spring and early autumn are the best times for a weekend in Italy: less heat, fewer queues, lower prices. In August, a short weekend risks being spent in queues and on crowded beaches.
Long weekends (April 25, May 1, June 2, All Saints' Day, Immaculate Conception) should be booked well in advance: family-friendly accommodations are the first to fill up.
Do you have a free weekend? Tell me about it
You don't need to have clear ideas yet. Tell me how many of you there are, where you're departing from, the age of the children and grandparents, and how much you want to spend: I'll propose one or two concrete ideas, with a clear, no-obligation quote.
Ask for an idea or a quote: I'll answer personally.
